Several experimental studies have provided evidence for oxidant-mediated injury to the lung
under clinically relevant conditions. For example, oxygen radical scavengers have
attenuated lung injury from endotoxin, air emboli, interleukin-1, ischemia and reperfusion,
hyperoxia, and toxic gas inhalation in several species including sheep, rats, swine, and
rabbits (1-7). Furthermore, exposure of animals to normobaric hyperoxia, which leads to
